Joseph "Joe" Temperley (Lochgelly, Scotland, 20 September 1929 – 11 May 2016) was a Scottish jazz saxophonist. He has performed on various instruments, but is most associated with the baritone saxophone, the soprano saxophone, and bass clarinet. Temperley played his first saxophone aged 14 in his Fife home town Lochgelly. Six months later, he got his first job at the Glasgow-based Tommy Sampson's Orchestra, having previously played in local dance bands.
Throughout, Temperley plays quite beautifully, coming up with consistently creative ideas within the straight-ahead tradition. This is one of his finest recordings to date.

Joe Temperley biography page and CD listing for Hep Jazz Records. Joe was born in 1929 Lochgelly, Fife, Scotland. Despite being born into a coal mining community he gravitated to jazz and with the encouragement of his elder brother, Bob, gained the experience to play with local dance bands. He next joined the legendary Tommy Sampson band on alto sax. He quickly established himself in London and by 1953 was playing tenor sax in the Jack Parnell Orchestra. The baritone sax gradually became his preferred horn and after a long spell with the Humphrey Lyttelton band left for New York in 1965.
Joe Temperley was born in Scotland and first achieved prominence in the United Kingdom as a member of Humphrey Lyttelton’s band from 1958 to 1965. In 1965, Temperley came to New York City, where he performed and/or recorded with Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, Duke Pearson, the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and Clark Terry, among many others. In 1974 he toured and recorded with The Duke Ellington Orchestra as a replacement for Harry Carney.
