Edge of the Sun is the eighth studio album by indie rock band Calexico. It was released in April 2015 on Anti Records. Calexico consists of: Ryan Alfred – upright and electric bass, synth, ambient guitar, vocals. Joey Burns – vocals, guitars, banjo, piano, organ, harmonica, cello, congas, accordion, shaker, ukulele, bass. John Convertino – drums, percussion. Sergio Mendoza – mellotron strings, percussion, piano, organ, backing vocals, vibes, guitar, vihuela, accordion, ukulele. Paul Niehaus – pedal steel.
Calexico have had a chiaroscuro career: after each of the band's more somber efforts, they tend to return with something lighthearted. Such is the case with Edge of the Sun: arriving after Algiers' journey into New Orleans noir, it feels like a working holiday - probably because it was close to one, with Joey Burns, John Convertino, and company spending ten days in Coyoacán, a Mexico City borough, for inspiration (later on, they recorded in Los Angeles and Athens, among other locales).
It’s one of the most striking moments on Edge of the Sun, a rusty tangle of staccato notes and syncopation atop a sinewy percussion groove. Not only does it chafe against the band’s default folk rock, but that central riff acts as a sort of code, as though the Tucson collective is offering coordinates for a northerly route connecting South and North, Sonora with San Francisco. It’s a song about origins ("¿De dónde eres?") and destinations ("¿Adónde vas?"), punctuated by the dots and dashes of a conspiratorial horn section. I’m not from here, I’m not from there,". It’s tempting to praise Calexico simply for its globetrotting spirit, but corralling so many styles and sounds onto one album should not be an end in itself. Fortunately, the album’s musical diversity is a reflection of its lyrical themes.

It’s called Edge of the Sun, and it’s out April 14 via Anti-. The album features a number of notable guest artists, including Neko Case, Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam, Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, Devotchka’s Nick Urata, and many others. The album was recorded in Mexico City. The image above is its cover artwork. In a statement, the band’s Joey Burns says the album is about pushing through the blue to brighter days.
Calexico have had an illustrious career since starting out way back in 1996. They have recorded with Iron and Wine and Nancy Sinatra, featured on an Arcade Fire B-side by request of the band themselves, toured with Pavement and the Dirty Three amongst many others, and have been featured on the Bob Dylan biopic He’s Not There and Breaking Bad. Despite all this, the band has more or less flown under the radar in comparison to their heavyweight contemporaries. Edge Of The Sun seems like a testament to an obsessive band, one eager to grow and stretch their long creative limbs. There are moments on the album that follow well trodden ground on the softer side of indie rock. Bullets and Rocks could very well be The Vaccines with it’s husky vocals and harmonies that follow a moody guitar riff streaked with drawling vintage organs and staccato horns.
