Young Japanese musicians were as entranced by US jazz during the 1980s as were festival audiences, andJ Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 perfectly captures their febrile embrace of the music. What gives the tracks on J Jazz value 30 or 40 years on is that they are not slavish knock-offs of US jazz

Blues at Carnegie Hall is a live Atlantic set from 1966, with the Modern Jazz Quartet performing eight blues-based compositions. In addition to such familiar pieces as the inevitable "Bags' Groove," "Ralph's New Blues" (dedicated to jazz critic Ralph Gleason), and "The Cylinder," there are a few newer pieces (including "Home," which is similar to Lee Morgan's hit "The Sidewinder") included for variety. This predictable but consistently swinging set is particularly recommended to fans of vibraphonist Milt Jackson. Pyramid (Blues for Junior). The Modern Jazz Quartet.

Modern Blues blows in on the back of the creative momentum built up by The Waterboys over the past few years. The band were at their potent, poetic best on An Appointment with Mr Yeats, the 2010-2012 album and tour of . Yeats poems set to rapturous rock music widely acclaimed as a career peak. That was followed in 2013 by Fisherman’s Box, an astonishing seven-disc collation of The Waterboys’ epic Irish sessions between 1986 and 1988, released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Fisherman’s Blues.

A new compilation called J-Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 portrays that extended decade in a country where, in the wake of post-World War II American occupation, the jazz community grew enormously. In particular, J-Jazz highlights independent releases never before issued outside Japan, mostly by artists who haven’t seen much international attention. There’s nothing that is consciously folk-fusion about their work-no koto or shakuhachi, for instance. It is a bit of a misnomer to call it Deep Modern Jazz, since plenty of pedal-point structures, ostinato vamps, electric piano, and booming bass amplification date these recordings. Yet it’s so consistently satisfying as to convince anyone that the well is indeed deeper than we might have imagined. Patrick Jarenwattananon.
