Julian Alexander Bream, CBE (born 15 July 1933), is an English virtuoso classical guitarist and lutenist. One of the most distinguished classical guitarists of the 20th century, he played a significant role in improving the public perception of the classical guitar as a respectable instrument. Bream was born in Battersea, London, and brought up in a musical environment in Hampton. Bream described his parents as both "conventional suburban", but in another way "very unusual"

After The Art of Julian Bream, Breams next album again featured a work by a contemporary British composer, though this time it was a concerto. Guitar Concertos, released by RCA in 1960, was comprised of only two works. As Bream reveals in his album note to Guitar Concertos: Fully aware that Spain is traditionally the spiritual home of the guitar, Arnold has deliberately decided to give the instrument a more universal character. He has successfully circumvented the Spanish overtones of the instrument by a subtle use of modal melodic material. 15. Next week classical guitarist Julian Bream will receive the Gramophone lifetime achievement award. Two years ago Julian Bream was walking with his retriever, Django, in the fields around his Dorset home, when a neighbour's dog knocked him to the ground, breaking both hips and injuring his left hand. For several years, Britain's greatest virtuoso of guitar and lute had played through the pain of arthritis, but these new injuries compelled him to renounce making music seriously.
