Ravel, Chausson - Trio Wanderer – Piano Trios.
The Fidelio Trio, active across the British Isles, has developed a reputation for playing music of the 20th century, along with lesser-known 19th century music, much of it from France. The music on this release fits these categories: the trios by Chausson and Fauré are not exactly common items, and the pieces by Satie, all arrangements, are unfamiliar even in their original versions. Yet all are involving works in the obviously well-considered and well-rehearsed performances they receive here.
Ravel disparaged his own Piano Trio, telling the performers at the premiere that "I prefer the ingenuous power of my Quartet to the scholarship of the Trio. Scholarship" is an odd word for the work - there is nothing either academic or antique about it - but it does exist at the opposite emotional pole from La Valse. It is not a serious piece. Annotator Marcel Marnat described the opening Allegro as "a model of nonchalant luminosity," and that description might apply to much of the music on the disc

Chausson, . Piano Trio, Op. 3, Tchaikovksy, . The Eskar Trio: Ravel and Chausson Piano Trios. Ernest Chausson 11//2008. 4 Concerto for Violin and Piano in D major, Op.
3 piano trio from 1881, is joined by Fauré’s only work in the genre – the heartfelt Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120 – composed during the latter part of his life. The album is completed with arrangements by John White of works by Erik Satie – selections from his only liturgical work, the Messe des Pauvres, and the incidental music to his own play, Le Piège de Meduse. The medium is notorious for presenting problems of balanc. he piano here also has an especially resonant bass.
