Two welcome changes in style made Blue Valentine a fresh listening experience for Tom Waits fans. First, Waits alters the instrumentation, bringing in electric guitar and keyboards and largely dispensing with the strings for a more blues-oriented, hard-edged sound. Second, though his world view remains fixed on the lowlifes of the late night, he expands beyond the musings of the barstool philosopher who previously had acted as the first-person character of most of his songs.

Blue Valentine (album), 1978 album by Tom Waits. Blue Valentine (film), 2010 film starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Blue Valentine: an Erotic Romance, 2002 novel by Alison Tyler. Romeo Is Bleeding" is a song written and performed by Tom Waits, and released on his 1978 album, Blue Valentine. The lyrics make frequent use of Spanish, including phrases such as "Hey Pachuco!", "Dáme esa pistola, hombre!" (Give me that pistol, man!), "Hijo de la chingada madre!" (You son of a fucking whore!), and "Vamos a dormir, hombre" (Let's go to sleep, man). Waits also makes a reference to gangster movie-star James Cagney, also mentioned in "Invitation to the Blues" from the album Small Change.

Tom Waits had one of the wildest trajectories of any rock artist in the 1970s-or possibly ever. A regular presence in San Diego’s coffeehouse folk scene in the late 1960s, he was living out of his car when Herb Cohen, the manager for the Mothers of Invention and Linda Ronstadt, discovered him and helped to secure a record deal with the fledgling Asylum Records. With each album his voice curdled more deeply into a whiskey growl, often sounding like Louis Armstrong after a bender. His songs sprawled into strange recitations about gutter characters: strippers and barflies, hucksters and grifters, vagrants holding up lampposts and waitresses slinging hash.

Six albums into Tom Waits’ discography and I was beginning to wonder if there’d be anything I hated. The opening track of 1978’s Blue Valentine, a cover of Somewhere from West Side Story, would be that thing I hate. It’s not that I don’t think Waits is capable of something so sweet and sentimental, but this track is way out of his style. To the uninitiated, it’s possible they wouldn’t notice a marked difference between some of the tracks on this album and those that preceded it. But if you’re familiar with his work, and I’m sure this was true when the album was initially released, the difference is actually quite stark. For starters, there are electric instruments on this album, from guitars to pianos.
