Palmieri, as the dynamo monster we all know he is, proves time and time again his mettle as the ultimate performer and piano percussionist in his inimitable ic/rhythmic way. Now, many of Palmieri's recordings are rife with absolutely startling pieces, but not as concentrated as heard here.

Eddie Palmieri (born December 15, 1936) is a Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. Palmieri has won a total of 9 Grammy Awards in his career, most recently for his 2006 album Simpático La Perfecta. Palmieri's La Perfecta departed from the traditional Caribbean sources of salsa instrumentation by introducing a new stylistic device into the New York Latin sound. Their signature sound relied heavily on two trombones and a flute instead of trumpets. El rumbero del piano (RMM, 1998). Masterpiece, Obra maestra (RMM/Universal, 2000) – with Tito Puente.

Palmieri eventually developed a distinctive style that melded Afro-Caribbean rhythms to modern jazz. He made his professional debut with Johnny Segui's orchestra in 1955 and joined Tito Rodriguez's popular band in 1958, remaining until 1960. In 1961, Palmieri formed La Perfecta, whose flute and twin- (or triple-) trombone front line was modeled on a Cuban-style charanga ensemble of piano, bass, violins, flute, and percussion - La Perfecta's use of trombones replaced violins. That heavy yet bright bottom end drew the attention of restless jazz musicians like Herbie Mann. El Rumbero Del Piano.
