Kiss of the Spider Woman is a musical with music by John Kander and Fred Ebb, with the book by Terrence McNally. It is based on the Manuel Puig novel El Beso de la Mujer Araña. Directed by Harold Prince, the musical had runs in the West End (1992) and Broadway (1993) and won the 1993 Tony Award for Best Musical.
A new "Broadway" cast recording was made by Mercury which included more of the score as well as several key dialogue seuqnces (very abridged) so the recording gave the listener a sense of hearing the full show. John Kander and Fred Ebb's music for Kiss of the Spider Woman tied for the 1993 Tony Award for Best Score with the Who's Tommy. The material seems ideal for the longstanding team, who have specialized in writing star vehicles (notably for Liza Minnelli) and have an interest in political themes (Cabaret). Although it features the major performers from the Broadway cast, this recording is not technically an original Broadway cast recording, but in fact an original London cast recording, since it was made in London at the time of the West End run, prior to the show's coming to Broadway.

This is the first New York revival of Kiss of the Spider Woman - The Musical since the show premiered on Broadway in 1993 at the Broadhurst Theatre. The show won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The press notes describe the prduction as "pairing this traditional musical with a creative team well-versed in experimental theater, the Vortex will create a unique theatrical event that joins political ideology with a cabaret aesthetic.
