Redlands Symphony proudly presents BEETHOVEN's Symphony No. 3 Eroica, op. 55. Discover little-known secrets and interesting discorse on its history, creation, and performance. The Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, op. 55, was performed for the first time in February 1805. The players, critics, and listeners all found the work extraordinarily difficult. It was clear from the beginning that this was no ordinary symphony. The exposition of the first movement was more than twice as long as any previous symphony. In classical symphonies, it was unusual to find a funeral march in the place of a song-like slow movement.
Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony no. 3 in E-flat major 'Eroica', Op. Beethoven's Symphony no. 3, Op. 55, also known as the Eroica (Italian for "heroic"), is a work marking the full arrival of the composer's "middle-period," a series of unprecedented large scale works of emotional depth and structural rigor. Completed in 1804 and performed the following year, it is widely regarded as a mature expression of the style of the late eighteenth century that also exhibits defining features of the romanticism of the nineteenth century.
