COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, ARRANGER, PIANIST, AUTHOR AND POLYMATH-André Previn lived numerous lives, winding up with one of the most consistently surprising careers of any modern musician. His story was that of the immigrant youngster who came to America, threw himself into its melting pot and succeeded perhaps even beyond his own expectations. A Kennedy Center Honor, an honorary knighthood, the Austrian and German Crosses of Merit, a Glenn Gould Prize, four Oscars and eleven Grammys made up just a fraction of the honors he received over the years

As a pianist, André Previn performs and records chamber music. His first opera, the brassy, bluesy and lyrical A Streetcar Named Desire is a rare hit among contemporary operas. Previn moved as a child from Berlin to California. While still a student, he worked in various Hollywood studios writing scores, most notably perhaps, the music to Porgy and Bess and My Fair Lady. Previn's recording history spans more than 50 years of work for all of the major labels.

Musician, who won four Oscars and conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, blurred musical boundaries. The German-born musician was an extraordinary and versatile talent who blurred the boundaries between jazz, pop, film and classical music.

André Previn, winner of ten Grammy Awards and Four Academy Awards, has died at the age of 89 at his home in Manhattan. He will be remembered for his extraordinary contribution to classical music, pop, jazz, and as a composer for Hollywood productions. Documentarian and presenter of Mornings on ABC Classic, Dr Martin Buzacott, says of him: "Andre Previn was the complete musician. A brilliant pianist, he was equally at home playing Mozart concerti as he was getting down with a jazz combo

At 16, he told English composer Antony Hopkins, he cut a piano jazz album that was a surprise hit and sold something like 200,000 copies. He joked that success was due in large part to the fact that it didn’t have my picture on the cover. He soon began arranging for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musicals. They were always looking for somebody who was talented, fast and cheap and, because I was a kid, I was all three, he later quipped.
