The Magazine is an album by Rickie Lee Jones, released in September 1984. It is her third full-length studio album, and was released as the follow-up to Pirates (1981). The album was partly composed in France and was co-produced by Jones and James Newton Howard. After the release of Pirates in July 1981, Jones spent 1982 on the road on tour before kicking her addiction to heroin and cocaine.

A South Austin church recently converted into a part-time music venue might not have seemed an obvious setting for a great show from Rickie Lee Jones, Rickie Lee Jones.
No doubt to the consternation of Warner Bros. Records, Rickie Lee Jones took more than three years to follow up her second (and second Top Five, gold-selling) album, Pirates (1981) with The Magazine. In the interim, the label issued the mini-album of live tracks and outtakes Girl at Her Volcano. But from the evidence of the finished product, she might have been better advised to take a little longer
Rickie lee jones - new album ‘Kicks’. Due out June 7, the album spans two decades (50s-70s) of pop, rock and jazz, presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of these songs. Rickie Lee Jones skyrocketed to fame in 1979 when as a barely known artist she appeared on Saturday Night Live. Performing her biggest hit Chuck E’s In Love in her trademark red beret, Time Magazine instantly dubbed her the Duchess of Coolsville. Since then she has gone on to win two Grammy Awards, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone twice, and included in VH1’s 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.
Rickie Lee Jones (album). Rickie Lee Jones is the debut album of singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. After arriving in California in the mid-1970s, Jones started taking songwriting more seriously, and by 1977 had met singer-songwriters Chuck E. Weiss and Tom Waits (Jones consequently became romantically involved with Waits). Jones had begun playing live in the Los Angeles area at the age of 21, and after meeting singer-songwriter Alfred Johnson, the pair began writing and performing live together (most notably at the Ala Carte club. Two of their collaborations, "Weasel and the White Boys Cool" and "Company," would later be recorded for Jones' debut album. She also sang jazz standards, as well as a song penned by her father ("The Moon Is Made of Gold") in her live sets.
This is not a new album for me. I have the record but wanted a CD copy of this amazing record. The Magazine was my very first introduction to Rickie Lee Jones (after Chuck E's In Love) music. I loved it instantly. When I went to college I didn't have a lot of money; but, when I got my student loan I marched down to the local record store and bought everything they had by her. Rickie Lee is not for everyone but I am still amazed at the storytelling that is heard in her songs. I can see each scene being played out as if I were watching it on a screen rather than hearing it on a record.
