Arthur De Greef (10 October 1862 – 29 August 1940) was a Belgian pianist and composer. Born in Louvain, he won first prize in a local music competition when he was only 11, and subsequently enrolled at the Brussels Conservatoire. His main teacher there was Louis Brassin, a former pupil of Ignaz Moscheles, although he also took lessons from other staffers at the institution, including Joseph Dupont, François-Auguste Gevaert and Fernand Kufferath.
If the name of Flemish composer Arthur de Greef means anything at all to anyone living, it may have some resonance among collectors of vintage classical recordings, as he was the first pianist to record the Grieg Concerto in A minor complete and made recordings in support of violinist Isolde Menges. De Greef was a student of Franz Liszt and an important member of Liszt's inner circle at the end of the Weimar master's life; later, de Greef would also make records of both standard, numbered piano concerti of Liszt. Born in Leuven, he won first prize in a local music composition at 11, and then studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under Louis Brassin, a student of Ignaz Moscheles. Other teachers included Joseph Dupont, François Auguste Gevaert and Fernand Kufferath.
