Here is the first ever album called Ambient, as Brian Eno had decided to call that the music he had been making for a while prior to 1978. Discreet Music from 1975 is his first ambient music album, aside from the name. Brian's collaboration with Cluster from 1977 called Cluster & Eno is a great ambient album as well. Such a great idea, to play this music at airports, bus terminals, train stations . Essential CD for ambient fans.

He likens this to a river - something that is always changing, but always the same. He also began experimenting with video art, turning televisions on their sides and treating them as "video paintings.

Brian Eno has gradually been placed- and has placed himself- at the beginning of a growing number of stories regarding contemporary music; needless to say, the man went to art school. His l mindset has angered some when it's led him to make sweeping claims such as, "I invented ambient music. Of course, much music has both ideologically and aesthetically predated Eno's (an issue explored in Mark Pendergast's The Ambient Century)

This might be music that is superficially clean and minimal but, at its best, you’ll hear the toil and effort underneath the seemingly frictionless surfaces – like looking at the surface of a geometric Malevich or Mondrian painting and seeing the thick, irregular, textured layers of oil on canvas. Lightness, composed for a St Petersburg museum in 1997, is an appealing series of soft, dissonant but slowly resolving drones and swooping sounds. Sometimes the laziness resurfaces. Thanks to the apps that Eno himself helped to develop, you can now create this kind of ambient music on your phone, with algorithms turning your choices into generative soundscapes. This month’s other picks.
