McCartney II is the second solo studio album by English musician Paul McCartney, released on 16 May 1980. It was recorded mostly alone by McCartney at his home studio in 1979 shortly before the dissolution of his band Wings in 1981. The album has become a cult favourite.
McCartney II was Paul’s first solo album since the formation of Wings in 1971. While its highly electronic style was certainly innovative, its cosily domestic origins were reminiscent of 1970’s McCartney album. Aptly, the two were reissued at the same time in 2011, as part of the remastered Paul McCartney Archive Collection, with extra audio and video material. As Paul said at the time, I made a couple of albums, the normal way you make albums, and I felt like doing it the homemade way again because I quite like recording like that – where I play all the instruments.

Paul McCartney personally supervised all aspects of these two reissues. The remastering work was done at Abbey Road using the same team who recently remastered the complete Beatles’ catalogue. The bonus audio CD includes the hit Coming Up (Live At Glasgow, 1979) and holiday perennial Wonderful Christmastime.
In that respect, it makes some sense to reissue the two simultaneously, but their original contexts could hardly be more different. Elsewhere on the album, McCartney remains similarly difficult to pigeonhole. If I told you the instrumental " Front Parlour ", with its tinny drum machine and sunny keyboard melody, was a 2009 blog hit by a lo-fi synth act, you'd likely believe me. And then there's " Temporary Secretary ", a frankly irritating but still interesting song that combines frenzied synth programming with a self-consciously bizarre vocal- McCartney sings as nasally as possible on the refrain, and tweaks it to sound robotic.

McCartney II - Recording Sessions, July 1979 The tracks were recorded WITHOUT a mixing console, with all microphones plugged directly into the back of the Studer 16 track tape machine at chez Macca. And in almost every case, Paul laid down backing tracks with bass, drums and guitar and added the vocals subsequently. As well as the tracks on the album, these other tracks were recorded : "Check My Machine" - The first song recorded, but left off the album, later appears as a B-side.
