Daybreak really proves that Saves the Day is and has always been Chris Conley’s brainchild first and foremost. There’s very little sonic or lyrical difference between this and any other of STD’s recent recordings. The 11-track release, the band’s seventh, still trades in guitar-driven, emo-flavored rock that centers on Conley’s unique vocals. In terms of standouts, there are a few. The titular opening track runs an amazingly ambitious 10:46, through several themes, complete with some intriguing guitar work. The rest of the album vacillates between mediocre ( E and Deranged and Desperate ) and slightly annoying ( Living Without Love and Undress Me ). Conley deserves deep respect for having the musical fortitude to continue to compose regardless of what anyone thinks. However, most Saves the Day fans (this one included) really just want to hear him play the old stuff.
Choosing the name "Daybreak" for an album about acceptance may not be the most subtle of choices, but subtlety isn’t really the forte of emo musicians. Neither is acceptance for that matter; which is perhaps why the album comes across as unsatisfying. It’s as close to vintage Saves the Day as there is on the album as it features Conley’s wonderfully nasally vocals, whiney emo-tastic lyrics, and loud, distorted guitars. After some detours through relaxed grooves and acoustic funk, the track ends with the eponymous closing movement. At the conclusion of the emotional roller coaster, Conley concludes the song with So take me in your arms knowing I’m the one.
Saves The Day are an emo/pop punk/indie band from Princeton, New Jersey. They initially formed in 1994 under the name Sefler until changing it in 1997. They formed at a very young age, with their debut album Can't Slow Down while they were still in high school. They continued on to release three albums now considered essentials in emo/pop punk, and crucial in developing the genre in their wake. These are the catchy and Through Being Cool, the quintessential classic Stay What You Are, and the experimental In Reverie
Though Daybreak generally fulfils that longing for the simpler days of 2001's Stay What You Are, it's ultimately hard to understand why it's taken almost three years to make such a simplistic record.
