Pearl Jam (sometimes referred to as The Avocado Album or simply Avocado) is the eighth studio album by American alternative rock band Pearl Jam, released on May 2, 2006 on J Records. It was Pearl Jam's first and only release for J Records, their last album issued by Sony Music. It was the band's first full-length studio release in almost four years, since Riot Act (2002)
The first five songs are all hard and fast rockers, setting an implacable tone. The last song is stunning and brilliant, written by lead guitarist Mike McCready, not ordinarily one of the main songwriters. Eddie Vedder co-wrote the music, but the lyrics are Mike's. This was the first Pearl Jam album I ever bought. Of course I had heard their hits on the radio, like everyone else. But only since THE SEED have I really tuned in to the band. I have come to appreciate their thoughtful lyrics, their stylistic diversity, and their political commitment.
Pearl Jam’s last record was 2013’s Lightning Bolt. The album hit No. 1 in the . but also became the first Pearl Jam full-length not to attain a Gold or Platinum certification by the RIAA. Still, Pearl Jam are rocking arenas and stadiums around the world, and will be playing new music before too long. We’re going to make a record, and we’re in the middle of it, guitarist Stone Gossard tells Rolling Stone. We’re just going to keep plugging away until we get one done.
Without this album Pearl Jam would be not nearly as popular. Even if other albums sound better, this one was the most influential. I hate going with "the popular opinion" but this really is their best album. Not that they haven't put out great albums since, they definitely have, all of them are great. But this is still their best. Fantastic album and the only post-Vs album that matches the greatness of the first two albums. An album that can be listened to from beginning to end, and will never leave you disappointed. This was their last good album. Late pearl jam is boring. They play fast and it doesn't sound right.
