One of Latin America’s leading orchestras, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo with conductor Isaac Karabtchevsky presents three of Villa-Lobos’s late symphonies. Expansive, rousing, and tuneful, this recording of the beloved Brazilian composer’s orchestral works shows another side of Villa-Lobos’s compositional style beyond his well-known chamber pieces. 96 kHz, 24-bit PCM – Naxos Studio Masters.

Villa-Lobos, after re-casting the music, went further to extract the music into a suite, which he recorded in 1958 with the Symphony of Air and with Balduína "Bidu" de Oliveira Sayão as the soprano. That recording continues to remain special for many listeners since then. The Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra) is simply excellent here and totally at home with the idiom (which is no surprise, especially since it is recording the great composer’s symphonies under Naxos as we speak). And Anna Korondi’s Portuguese singing is beautiful, delightful, yet immaculate.
Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887 - November 17, 1959) was a pioneering Brazilian modernist composer. He penned twelve symphonies, four operas, five ballets, and one of the most important string quartet cycles of the twentieth century. His music is noted for its exotic sound palette and formal inventiveness, influenced both by Brazilian folk music and stylistic elements from the European classical tradition.
