Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul is a 2007 two-disc compilation album featuring unreleased and rare songs by Aretha Franklin recorded between 1966 and 1973 on Atlantic Records. The liner notes, nominated for a Grammy at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, were co-written by Jerry Wexler, who was responsible for producing the sound which solidified Franklin as a legend, and David Ritz, who co-authored Franklin's 1999 autobiography.

Album · 2007 · 35 Songs. Covering Aretha’s prolific and wildly successful period at Atlantic Records (1966-74), Rare & Unreleased weaves together outtakes, demos, and B-sides from the soul legend’s vast catalog. I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) is a delicate gospel shuffle, the sparse instrumentation granting Aretha’s raw, towering vocals the space to flourish. Her passionate rendition of My Way shows off her warm phrasing and instinctive melodic shifts, while The Fool On the Hill injects the Beatles track with her love of jazz

1. Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) - Demo. Aretha Franklin - That's the Way I Feel About Cha - Alternate Version; Hey Now Hey The Other Side of the Sky Outtake. 30. Aretha Franklin - Ain't but the One. 06:06.

Aretha Franklin's recordings for Atlantic in the late 1960s and early 1970s are universally acknowledged as her best, and this two-CD set draws exclusively from that era, spanning late 1966 to 1973. Aside from the B-sides "Pledging My Love/The Clock" and "Lean on Me," everything here is a demo, outtake, or alternate version - a real hoard of largely previously unheard material from the prime of one of the greatest soul singers. Franklin and Atlantic did exercise sound judgment as to what to select for release, however. So these recordings, as valuable as they'll.

Aretha Franklin: Rare & Unreleased Recordings From the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul". The back story: Jerry Wexler, who produced many of the classic Atlantic soul hits, was impressed by Franklin ever since she signed as a teenager to Columbia Records. So he jumped at the chance to sign the gospel-blues singer when she left the rival label in the mid-'60s. He then teamed Franklin with young Southern musicians who had already helped him go from old-school recording strategies to new ones.

Aretha Franklin is also the first woman ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On their web page chronicling her 1987 induction, they write, She is a singer of great passion and control whose finest recordings define the term soul music in all its deep, expressive glory. As Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun observed, 'I don't think there's anybody I have known who possesses an instrument like hers and who has such a thorough background in gospel, the blues and the essential black-music idiom.

This is great for any Aretha or general soul enthusiast! I have most of her studio albums and few other rare recordings but I hadn't heard anything from this until by chance I read an article on her recently - which quoted the titles of some outtake songs from albums I have. It has a raw quality that the studio final recordings clean up, but are nice to hear. Soul nectar, from the Queen. This is jaw-dropping astonishing stuff.
