Record is the debut album by the American rock band Big Star. It was released in August 1972 by Memphis-based Ardent Records. Many critics praised the album's elegant vocal harmonies and refined songcraft but Record suffered from poor distribution and sold fewer than 10,000 copies upon its initial release. However, Record gained wider attention in the late '70s in the UK when EMI reissued it with Radio City as a double LP package due to increasing demand.

Record showcases the collaborative songwriting of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton, who fashioned themselves as Memphis' own Lennon-McCartney. They alternate vocals between Bell's sandpapery rasp and Chilton's smooth falsetto (which doesn't even sound like it emanates from the same throat as those Box Tops vocals), and the result is one of power-pop's defining records. Bell left the band shortly after the album's release and commercial failure, which made Big Star essentially a solo project for Chilton. So Radio City is a very different record.

The shop, which opened in 1948, sells all kinds of music from pop to classical but it specialises in soundtracks, cinema and theatre. It was recently described in Garth Cartwright’s new chronicle of the UK record shop, Going For a Song, as as Europe’s foremost soundtrack shop. Once curated by the legendary George Ginn, who has retired at 88, the shop has passed to new owners, Keith Blackmore and David Chappell, who are determined to keep up its traditions for lovingly cared for records.

Loud, obnoxious, funky, avant-garde, political, hilarious – Public Enemy's brilliant second album is all of these things, all at once. Chuck D booms intricate rhymes with a delivery inspired by sportscaster Marv Albert; sidekick Flavor Flav raps comic relief; and production team the Bomb Squad builds mesmerizing, multilayered jams, pierced with shrieking sirens. Two important things happened to John Coltrane in 1957: The saxophonist left Miles Davis' employ to join Thelonious Monk's band and hit new heights in extended, ecstatic soloing. Coltrane also kicked heroin addiction, a vital step in a spiritual awakening that climaxed with this legendary album-long hymn of praise – transcendent music perfect for the high point of the civil rights movement. The indelible four-note theme of the first piece, "Acknowledgment," is the humble foundation of the suite.

The album features George’s first UK Number 1 – and the UK’s Official Song of the Summer – Shotgun, and the Number 2-peaking Paradise. Last year’s best-selling album, ÷ from Ed Sheeran, rounds out 2018 as the third biggest artist album (510k), while the cast recording of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which spent four weeks at Number 1 in 2018, occupies the Number 4 slot (374k). Drake’s fifth album Scorpion, which includes six Top 5 singles, rounds out the Top 5 on 300k. International acts dominate the rest of the Top 10, with Post Malone’s beerbongs & Bentleys at Number 6, A Star Is Born featuring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at Number 7, Love from Canadian crooner Michael Buble at Number 8, and Eminem’s record-extending chart topper Kamikaze (10). Dua ranks highest among British females, with the album being the most popular of 2018 not to peak at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart.
