I Am the Greatest is a comedy album by boxer Cassius Clay, released in August 1963 – six months before he won the world heavyweight championship, publicly announced his conversion to Islam, and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. It was released by CBS Columbia. The album helped establish Ali's reputation as an eloquently poetic "trash talker". The album has also been identified as an early example of rap music and a precursor to hip hop music.
But turn back the clock to the early '60s and Muhammad Ali was Cassius Clay, a loudmouthed prize fighter who was making headlines by outrageous behavior both in and out of the ring. He recited poetry, yammered on incessantly about how pretty he was, and made with the promo noise not unlike that of a modern day WWF wrestler. It was big enough news back then that Columbia Records had him record an entire album of his poetry for public consumption.

Rounds were titled I Am The Greatest, I Am the Double Greatest and The Knockout. Each round lasted between 2 1/2 and seven-plus minutes and featured Clay boasting of his greatness, and claiming he was the resurrector of the fight game. The rounds were enhanced with a live audience and so Clay’s material - much of it directed directly at Liston - felt more like a comedy club standup routine. Clay’s musical ties run deep. As the world prepares to pay its final respects to the man born Cassius Clay, but transformed into a worldwide icon as Muhammad Ali, he should rest in peace knowing the will he left on I Am The Greatest holds true 53 years earlier. To this nation, I’ve made this bequest, So spread the word north and south, said the future Ali on Round 7’s 2138. Some folks leave their brains through science, But when I go, I’m leavin’ my mouth!, It’s the greatest!
