Clocking in at just under 23 minutes, Introducing, Brilliant Colors' 2009 debut, flits by like a will-o'-the-wisp. It's just enough time to get a decent impression of what the band has to offer: refreshingly raw yet smart indie pop, reminiscent of old-school New Zealand indie pop acts (the Chills, the Bats) and the puckish side of C-86 (Talulah Gosh). At their strongest, Brilliant Colors are gutsy and tender, nocturnal and innocent - a spine-tingling blend of pop-oriented fizz and punk-influenced grit
Album · 2009 · 10 Songs. Introducing Brilliant Colors.
Brilliant (stylised as Brill!ant) is the eleventh and final studio album by British synth-pop band Ultravox. It was released on 25 May 2012 by Chrysalis Records. It is the group's first studio album in 18 years, and the first in 28 years from the "classic" Ultravox line-up of Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross (the last being 1984's Lament)
Truth be told, Brilliant Colors - a San Francisco-based trio consisting of principal songwriter Jess Scott, Diane Anastasio, and Michelle Hill - hurl forth powerful if not surprising hooks from their dense, urgent music. With just 10 songs in 24 minutes, the band’s debut album, Introducing Brilliant Colors, manages to evoke chunks of 60s psychedelia, 70s UK punk and no-wave, 80s jangle-pop, 90s indie-rock, and 00s minimalism. With foot-to-accelerator punk-rock abandon, it charges unrelentingly through each of these wall-of-distortion ditties, scrappy riffs and all. Beneath this guise of power.
And Brilliant Colors' brevity is the source of, if not their wit, then at least their terse, maddeningly obtuse yet strangely specific lyricism. But alternately, it is difficult to develop an emotional attachment to a song that is over before you know it began. And it becomes difficult to make a distinction between many of the songs, because they are never really given a chance to blossom into memorable hooks or to rev up to distinct speeds. Introducing, therefore, does exactly what its name implies: announces the arrival of a new noise-pop talent without giving too much away. It is an alluring collection that hints at greatness but halts at achieving it, instead teasing listeners for its sequel.
LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Brilliant Colors Format: Vinyl. 2009 release, a sharp debut album packed with taut guitar buzz and dreamy melodies, neatly expanding on the promise of those in-demand seven inch singles. Clocking in at barely 24 minutes, its focus and concision perfectly encapsulate where Pop should be in 2009. Side-stepping all the Indie pigeonholes, Brilliant Colors have produced a scrappy gem of a record.
