Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, was written between 1877 and 1878. Its first performance was at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow on February 22 (or the 10th using the calendar of the time), 1878, with Nikolai Rubinstein as conductor. In Middle Europe it sometimes receives the nickname "Fatum", or "Fate"

Tchaikovsky's cornerstone Symphony No. 36 is performed by Pierre Monteux and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for this 1959 Living Stereo recording. Monteux was famous for molding the Boston Symphony into an orchestra who's reputation was known worldwide as having the "French" sound and for being experts in the French and Russian repertoire.

Symphony No. 4 was written during the most tumultuous period of Tchaikovsky's life. It was during a period in his life when he was both recently married and divorced. During this time period he also attempted suicide. Of all his works, Symphony No. 4, is considered by many to have more emotional impact and musical structure then any of his earlier pieces in part due to the personal tragedies he endured while writing this symphonic masterpiece
