Overpowered (LP, Ora + LP, Pin + Album). EMI, EMI. 50999 5 07091 1 3, 507 0911. Roisin still does her very best in juxtaposing cartoonishly weird temper over smooth, groovy pop-tunes and uptempos but here she seems to be lost between styles, playing it cool but at times just as too safe (take 'Movie Star' or 'Cry Baby' which are sympathetic and irresistable but obvious Goldfrapp and Divine rip-offs).
Idiosyncratic Irish singer Róisín Murphy explores the alluringly synthetic sides of disco-pop on Overpowered, giving the album a turbocharged pulse and candy-coated sheen. Let Me Know" glitters brighter than a roller-rink disco ball in the heart of NYC, while "Dear Miami" plays with a sleazy Italo groove, and "Movie Star" is an Olivia ectro tour de force that's got Moroder written all over it. This record is 100% pure pleasure-a high kick of drama, art, and artifice for the dance floor

Arty, cerebral, and sometimes downright kooky, Róisín Murphy zigs where other British pop singers zag. She's been one of pop's best-kept secrets since Moloko disbanded, edging her way toward a sound that isn't exactly mainstream but will give her the more widespread acclaim she deserves.
