Spanish Female Singers 1962-1974. Label: Vampi Soul ‎– VAMPI 130. Series: ¡Chicas! – Format: 2 Vinyl, LP, Compilation. There is a lot of great stuff to chose from for an album with a title like this. Unfortunately, the track selection is really poor. For some strange reason the compilers decided to include many artists who aren't Spanish at all (Los Tíos Queridos, Los Shakers, Fresia Soto, Tania Velia, Los 3 Sudamericanos). Between the mid ‘60s and mid ‘70s, Spain saw an explosion of girl-pop, records made by female singers that used mainstream pop styles sometimes mixed with traditional Spanish music. It was music that expressed hope and optimism at the height of the repressive Franco regime, and it demonstrates just how much buoyancy lurked underneath the surface during that brutal time. Chicas compiles 24 tracks of this music. While it’s uneven, as compilations of this type tend to be, it’s definitely worth hearing

One admirable Spanish characteristic was to back girl singers with garage bands so Marisol’s ‘Johnny’ has a feverish garage-pop sound while the brilliant ‘Sola Estoy’ by Lorella con Los Shakers sounds exactly like the kind of great garage-soul that Greg Cartwright started producing two decades later in Memphis.
