Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five is a compilation album release by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five (On The Strength is their official second album). It was released in July 1983, and it is a compilation of their Sugar Hill Records hit singles including "The Message", "New York New York and "White Lines". Over half of the tracks were single-only releases prior to this compilation.
On the Strength is the reunion (and second) album by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Released in 1988, it was the full line-up’s last album together. Although certainly contributing to the album itself, Cowboy (Keith Wiggins), was not present for the album or single photo shoots.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five would eventually break up into two separate groups due to differences until a brief reunion in 1987 led to the release of the original line-up's second album On the Strength. Afterward, they disbanded permanently. Today the group's legacy continues on as Grandmaster's Furious Five with only Melle Mel and Scorpio as remaining members. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five merged the Afrocentric consciousness expressed by such early rappers as Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets with b-boy production to create "The Message," an all-time rap anthem. It was the focal point of this LP, which also included "It's Nasty" and "Scorpio," two other strong cuts that might have been winners on their own. Unfortunately, rather than a starting point, this album proved to be their ultimate peak.
