Disciples of the Unseen. Album (Studio full-length). Tigris and Euphrates Witness the royal flames The enemy of the cross has smashed the gates Blood drops flowing from our swords We marched as a savage horde We died and died until we planted our flag. War drums have sealed the fate Of thousand condemned disciples We shall defend the land aginst the saracens Blood drops flowing from their swords They marched as a savage horde They died and died until they planted their flag
Aeternam have released 'Disciples of the Unseen' on Metal Blade, their first album for the label - and the debut album for the band. In terms of cover art, the Canadian death metal band definitely started themselves on the right foot by hiring Montrealer Pascal Laquerre, who gave them the striking image of a demon in bright reds and oranges with an Egyptian wedjat eye in flames above his mouth. My mission for the cover of this album was actually very clear, yet open," Laquerre told Noisecreep
Aeternam is barely one album into their careers and yet, thanks to their brand of Middle Eastern influenced death metal, they're already being compared to Nile. It's a lazy comparison, really. Aside from the rather obvious ancient Egypt/Mesopotamian themes, they don't have all that much in common. Although this doesn't necessarily mean Disciples of the Unseen is eclectic or groundbreaking, it does make for a fairly rewarding listen. Unlike some of their peers, Aeternam do not allow the middle-eastern elements to define their music, in a gimmicky sort of way. There are moments when said influences are the main focal point, such as the symphonic intro track, "Ars Almadel" or the interlude "Iteru", which forgoes death metal completely. But Aeternam is a metal band, not an Egyptian folk tribute band.
