Complete your Paul Simon collection. Needless to say, my . pressed vinyl copy of this album is shockingly bad. It has loads of non-fill/stitching which is just typical of Rainbo vinyl.

Much of Simon's lyrics touch on themes of spirituality and mortality, which Simon said was unintentional and resulted naturally in his songwriting process for the album. When So Beautiful or So What was released by Hear Music on April 8, 2011, it received widespread acclaim from critics, many of whom considered it Simon's best work in two decades. It appeared on many year-end critics' lists as one of the year's best records. Recording and production. So Beautiful or So What was co-produced by Phil Ramone (pictured in 2009). For So Beautiful or So What, Simon reunited with record producer and former collaborator Phil Ramone, who previously worked with him on Simon & Garfunkel's 1982 live album The Concert in Central Park. According to Simon, the reunion came casually; he told Ramone when they met each other that he was beginning to work on a new album and, as Ramone lived.

After successful run at self-producing, yielding hits like Graceland (Warner Bros. 1986) and The Rhythm of the Saints (Warner Bros. 1990), Paul Simon reunites with Phil Ramone for So Beautiful or So What, the singer/songwriter's first album since the largely overlooked Surprise (Warner Bros. including So Beautiful-but he's clearly focused on quality over quantity, with Songs from The Capeman (Warner Bros. 1997) his only truly weak recording. Simon's ability to build incrementally, one album, to the next, has been impressive, sometimes making quantum leaps like Graceland, other times consolidating the past on You're the One (Warner Bros.

I don’t think Paul Simon’s ever made a beautiful album. He’s made plenty of beautiful songs though. That made albums that were at least good. That was until a little over a decade ago when; after The Capeman, one of his most melodic sets; the quality of his music suddenly declined. He’s been stuck in an artistic rut ever since. This new album, only his third in all that time, is no return to form.

There's a lot of wry musing on the nature of God, who, in Love Is Eternal Sacred Light, peeves that "most folks don't get when I'm joking", on mortality and what awaits us in the afterlife: queues, forms and fragments of rock'n'roll. Though there’s a lot of God talk in So Beautiful or So What‘s lyrics (Jesus, Buddha, and the Man Himself all put in appearances), this cagey old pro makes room for stray nonsense phrases like bop-bop-a-whoa as well; spirited spirituality is his goal these days. Simon’s first album in five years is full of heavy business: life’s meaning, beauty, brutality and brevity. Simon is pushing 70; it’s appropriate that he’s got mortality on his mind. But the songs rarely feel heavy. Exclusive: Paul Simon’s New Video For ‘The Afterlife’. So Beautiful or So What is old-fashioned in its brevity (10 songs, 38 minutes) and vivid in its storytelling. On Love Is Eternal Sacred Light, a roadhouse-blues jam that rides a ghostly techno pulse, a character who appears to be the Almighty (in one of a few album appearances) bitches while driving a pre-owned ’96 Ford down the highway: Check out the radio/Pop-music station/That don’t sound like my music to me. Yeah, yeah: Everyone’s a critic. But Simon’s reveries come through a lens of the present. Getting Ready for Christmas Day dialogues with history by sampling a 1941 sermon about mortality by preacher Rev.

This is Paul Simon’s first album since Surprise five years ago but it has clearly been time well spent. Indeed, you suspect that Simon has been working his 69-year-old ass off: So Beautiful or So What is the kind of effortless-sounding concoction that probably takes considerable effort to create. The arrangements are deft and tasteful, glinting with familiar elements of folk, blues, country and Afro-pop, while Simon’s voice retains the clearness and suppleness of his Sixties youth, like water flowing over pebbles

I just do not understand why an artist of the stature of Paul Simon is subjected to having the vinyl edition of his work pressed at Rainbo??? If he were an unknown 'indie' artist, maybe I would. Needless to say, my U.S. pressed vinyl copy of this album is shockingly bad. It has loads of non-fill/stitching which is just typical of Rainbo vinyl. It is unplayable so I had to buy the U.S. CD. I bought my copy in Germany in 2011/12, there is no European vinyl pressing. A friend of mine bought his copy one year later and it is identical to my copy. I did warn him to steer clear of Rainbo vinyl. What a debacle! This is probably one of Simon's best recorded works next to 'Graceland' and the issuing label, Hear Music, couldn't even take the trouble of selecting a decent pressing plant. Even the 'dogs' in the street know Rainbo is useless. Had I known that the vinyl was a Rainbo 'effort', I wouldn't have wasted my money on it. I hope somebody reissues this album on vinyl in the future and entrusts the pressing work to a competent manufacturer.
