Gail Ann Dorsey (born November 20, 1962) is an American musician. With a long career as a session musician, she is perhaps best known for her lengthy residency in David Bowie's band, from 1995 to Bowie's death in 2016.
So who is Gail Ann Dorsey? Gain Ann Dorsey was born and bred in Philadelphia, a city with quite the reputation for birthing funky bass players. At first favoring guitar, Dorsey acquired a bass when she was 14 but took it up with greater ambition by her early 20s. With a passion for writing and producing films, she attended the California Institute of the Arts for Live Action Film, but the notorious uncertainty of the film industry inspired her to turn to a career in music.
Music, Film, TV and Political News Coverage. Dorsey started out on a six-week contract but wound up serving as Bowie’s touring bassist all the way through his final concerts in 2004. She also played on 1997’s Earthling and 2013’s The Next Day. About a week after Bowie’s shocking passing, Dorsey got on the phone with Rolling Stone to talk about her nearly two-decade run with the iconic artist.
