M83 is a French pop band from Antibes, formed in 2001 by Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. Gonzalez remains the primary member of the band after Fromageau’s departure after the release of their second album. The band is named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83, and its musical aesthetic is influenced by shoegaze in its extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instrumentals, although M83’s songs employ considerably less guitar than most shoegaze bands.
M83. Biography by Heather Phares. The lush, nostalgic, synth pop-meets-shoegaze project of Frenchman Anthony Gonzalez.
Now M83's time line curves back to its skeletal 2001 self-titled album, newly reissued by Mute. If anything, M83 is a good spot to give pause to later Loveless comparisons. The disembodied guitars of his later period do evoke Kevin Shields; M83's dream pop, though, is more redolent of mid-period MBV, especially Isn't Anything's "Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside)" minus the vocals, and here this sweaty-palm sensibility is clearest.
