You in Reverse is the sixth full-length album released by indie rock band Built to Spill. The band added one new member for this album, making Built to Spill a quartet for the first time. It was also the first album since Ultimate Alternative Wavers not recorded or produced by Phil Ek. The lineup was Doug Martsch, Brett Nelson, Scott Plouf, and Jim Roth. The album was recorded in Portland, Oregon at Audible Alchemy. You in Reverse was released on April 11, 2006. All songs written by Built To Spill.
The first Built to Spill album in a decade not to feature Phil Ek's crystalline production, You in Reverse wastes no time in establishing itself as its own distinct entity within the band's catalog: As the album begins, drummer Scott Plouf lays down an urgent backbeat that immediately blasts away the band's recent complacency, establishing opener "Goin' Against Your Mind". Long songs are by no means new for Built to Spill but You in Reverse suffers from a lack of structure that leaves much of it sounding indulgent and extraneous.
Built to Spill is an American indie rock band based in Boise, Idaho. The band has released eight full-length albums. Their most recent, Untethered Moon, was released on April 21, 2015. Former Treepeople guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as the band's original members. In an interview with Spin, Martsch stated that he intended to change the band's lineup for every album, himself being the only permanent member.
Built to Spill haven't released an album for five years, and the time off seems to have rejuvenated the band - You in Reverse is full of fire and energy.
Album · 2006 · 10 Songs. It’s just a habit, Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch sings near the end of the band’s first album in five years. But You in Reverse, however akin its often melancholy vocals and lyrics are to earlier BTS releases, finds the band with a new second guitarist (Jim Roth) and laying down some of its most sprawling, yet focused, studio tracks. The rushing Goin’ Against Your Mind lets drummer Scott Plouf take a lead role, while Conventional Wisdom pays homage to Television with a towering solo and even some chiming notes that could be straight from Marquee Moon

Posted Jun 06, 2006 10:04 AM. Ultimate Guitar. Sound - 8 This album was particularly upbeat, at least more so than Perfect From Now On. The music itself was fantastic, with lots of grabbing guitar lines. The lead guitar melodies seemed to tell a story, meshing perfectly with the rhythm and backing melodies. Some parts, however, did seem to be a bit repetitive. Namely, the song "Liar. Other songs, such as "Wherever You Go" made good use of the few effects used in this album. Lyrics - 8 I think that this album contains some of Doug Martsch's best lyrics to date. A lot of subtle clever bits woven in with the music
