This album was issued in 1981 in addition to two singles and an EP released the same year: State of Emergency, Flesh as Property and Second Layer (although none of these extras appear on this release, unfortunately). Listening to this album, there is a distinct flavour of The Sound as part of the soul of the songs played but this duo were the very core of The Sound so that’s no real big surprise. What you get here is real edge and a disconnected style that has a detached, impersonal feel
Here, it gets a deserved re-press from the folks at Dark Entries. 34 years on, it still retains the power to shock, with Adrian Borland and Graham Green's raw, weighty mix of post-punk basslines, sharp guitars, fuzzy electronics, tape loops and basic drum machine grooves still sounding deliciously fresh.
Second Layer was a side project of Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey, members of post punk band The Sound. The project was born from early punk band The Outsiders, which had both Graham and Adrian as members. Second Layer featured the voice and guitars of Adrian mixed with the bass and pioneering electronics of Graham. The music was bleak, detached, and desolate, but very beautiful. By 1981 Second Layer had found a home on London-based label Cherry Red and released their debut album World of Rubber in November of that year. Full of hard mechanical sounds produced by Adrian’s guitars and Graham’s homemade drum machines, the album actively engages the listener. Songs are manic and twisted, pervaded with haunting subterranean atmospheres. Adrian’s anguished voice tackles lyrics that are politically charged and morbidly fixated.
